Who Can Do Autism Diagnostics for NDIS Access?

To access services through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), obtaining a comprehensive and accurate autism diagnosis is essential. The NDIS requires that autism diagnoses be conducted by qualified professionals who meet specific standards and credentials. At Jardin Spectrum Assist (JSA), our team meets these criteria to provide valid and reliable autism diagnostic assessments.

At JSA, we use a specialist multidisciplinary team approach to ensure that all aspects of an individual’s needs are thoroughly considered. This collaborative method provides a holistic view of the individual’s abilities and challenges, facilitating an accurate and comprehensive diagnosis. Our team includes an experienced Psychologist, Developmental Educator, and Occupational Therapist, each contributing their expertise to the diagnostic process.

NDIS Diagnostic Confirmation:
According to NDIS guidelines, autism must be diagnosed by one of the following professionals:

  • Specialist Multidisciplinary Team

    • A multidisciplinary approach ensures that all aspects of the individual’s needs are assessed, providing a thorough view of their abilities and challenges. This team typically includes a Psychologist, Developmental Educator, and Occupational Therapist working together to complete the diagnostic process.

  • Paediatrician or Psychiatrist

    • Medical specialists with extensive experience in diagnosing and managing autism.

  • Clinical Psychologist

    • Experienced in the assessment of Pervasive Developmental Disorders and utilising the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria.

NDIS Criteria for Autism Diagnosis:

  • Autism must be assessed using the current DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.

  • The diagnosis should specify the severity level as Level 2 (Requiring substantial support) or Level 3 (Requiring very substantial support).

  • In certain circumstances, with additional evidence, such as a Functional Capacity Assessment, Autism (Level 1) clients can still access the NDIS if the impact of their disability is substantiated and addresses the NDIS criteria.
